5 Happy Habits

How are you feeling right now?

How are you feeling about your business right now?

I’ve been listening again to Shawn Achor’s “The Happiness Advantage” to remind myself of the happy habits.

Happy habits are the things you can do every day that over time can make you significantly happier (despite – or inspite of – the times we live in). Achor’s research shows that, rather than waiting for success to bring you happiness, success comes to those who have deliberately cultivated happiness.

Here are the 5 simple things Achor recommends we do every day that, when we do them consistently, will make us happy:

  1. Each morning, write down 3 things you’re grateful for. This is not the same 3 every day! Write down three new things to write about. This trains our brain to search out and find the positives.
  2. Journal for 2 minutes a day about one positive experience you’ve had over the last 24 hours. Write down every detail you can remember. This makes your brain literally re-experience the experience which doubles its positive impact. Remember to focus on a positive, not negative experience though!
  3. Meditate daily. It’s quite simple: stop what you’re doing, relax and watch your breath go in and out for just 2 minutes. This trains your brain to focus where you want it to, and not get distracted by any negativity in your environment.
  4. Do a random act of kindness over the course of each day. To make this simple, Achor recommends a specific act of kindness like, at the start of each day, taking just 2 minutes to write an email to someone you know praising them or thanking them for something they did.
  5. Exercise for 15 minutes every day. Simple cardio such as a brisk walk has a powerful antidepressant impact, in many cases stronger (and more long-lasting) than an antidepressant!

Take some time every day to do something that makes you happy!
