(It’s a trick question. I already know the answer. You are.)
Let me tell you a little story. You already know it. That’s the magic. It’s simple – and the real wonder is: why don’t we do it more often?
I was stuck.
Really stuck.
Staring at a problem like it had personally offended me.
Pen and paper got a look-in.
I sulked at my coach.
I glared at the screen.
I even muttered a few choice words. (You know the ones.)
Finally, I did the unthinkable…
I shut the laptop. I was home by 5pm (a miracle in itself). My husband looked genuinely confused. “Why are you home so early?”
Reader, I took two days off. Not a sick day. Not a ‘working from home but secretly checking emails every 20 minutes’ day. Actual. Real. Time. Off.
I filled it with the good stuff:
Long drives with music up and the roof down
Chats with friends that filled my cup
Gorgeous food
Sunshine, a book, and a cheeky glass of wine
Walks in Nature (complete with nose-boops from curious horses)
Then came Monday.
The answer? Crystal clear.
Not forced. Not wrestled out of my brain like an old cork. Just … there.
Here’s the truth:
We forget that creativity doesn’t thrive in chaos. It blossoms in stillness.
We live in a culture that glorifies hustle like it’s some kind of badge of honour.
Work 16-hour days!
Run on coffee and cortisol!
Sleep is for the weak!
Spoiler alert: It’s not. And it’s not sustainable either.
Research shows that extended periods of silence can increase brain cell development, boost productivity, and significantly benefit our mental health. Why? Because silence lets our nervous systems relax. It gives our brains a chance to breathe.
Without it, we end up in sensory overload. Our prefrontal cortex (that’s the bit responsible for focus, problem-solving, and all the good stuff) gets fried. No wonder we struggle to concentrate or feel inspired.
But with silence?
✨ Ideas flow
✨ Problems untangle themselves
✨ Creativity sparks
✨ Solutions emerge, unforced
So next time you see someone online bragging about their 3-hour sleep schedule, 24/7 hustle, or number of likes on their post – smile and scroll on.
Because hustle is not a virtue.
What about you? Are you always on?
