Will you take a stand against domestic abuse and make a real difference to the people in your business?

1 in 5 men and women experience some form of domestic abuse according to the Office for National Statistics.

This means that there is a chance that people in your workforce are experiencing it.

Domestic abuse is one of the last taboos that very few people are willing to speak about whether they are victims or not.

The impact of domestic abuse on those experiencing it is immense. Most people experiencing domestic abuse suffer in silence, through feelings of guilt or shame or fear of the perpetrator. Some people don’t even know that they are victims of domestic abuse, so insidious are its many forms.

The financial cost to businesses in England and Wales is thought to be £14 billion a year (Home Office, 2019) through lost productivity caused by time off work due to domestic abuse.

The Business Charter on Domestic Abuse is calling on all businesses to act by pledging support to it and implementing 5 simple steps:

1 – Domestic Abuse Aware

All staff to be domestic abuse aware by undertaking training and committing to continually increasing their knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse.

2 – Effective Response

Provide an effective response to colleagues and clients impacted by domestic abuse by committing to an agreed plan for managing disclosures.

3 – Safe Spaces

Providing safe spaces for people impacted by domestic abuse to make phone calls, meet with domestic abuse support services or access legal and housing support to help keep themselves safe.

4 – Challenge Attitudes and Beliefs

Sexism and misogyny underpin domestic abuse. Challenging sexist “banter” and ensuring negative attitudes and beliefs do not proliferate ensures an environment where people feel safer to ask for support.

5 – Visible Support

Commit to visibly supporting your local domestic abuse service. Put up posters in your place of work so people can get support and are aware your organisation is committed to taking action against domestic abuse.

Don’t underestimate the power of your business to break the silence of domestic abuse. You can play a crucial role in creating a safer environment for people impacted by domestic abuse.

Join the growing movement of businesses taking a stand and making a positive impact.

Act today and be part of the solution!
